The cloned sites have a huge resemblance to the original web pages, and can only be distinguished by the security certificates of our browser (Internet Explorer famous lock or a notice in the address bar in Firefox).
The "tab napping" takes advantage of the new browser and its system of multiple tabs. They only need to open a browser window and can open multiple tabs (by pressing the Control combination T) to browse multiple pages at once.
This system recognizes what tabs are being used and which, although open, have not been used in a while. The latter change without our behalf to one of these sites cloned, and if we have the misfortune to enter that tab and put our bank, the criminals and have to do with them what they want.
How it works
This system installs a Java Script in your browser, which makes good page, such as Banco Santander, changes to a cloned page, without, a priori, we realize, when the tab is shows the legal web of Banco Santander takes a while inactive.
How to avoid?
We can identify whether the site is secure or not observing the address bar. If the URL begins with https: / / secure.
Always, we repeat, ALWAYS, there to set the page address of our bank or shop where you want to buy this starts way before we give our card number or password. It is the way to verify that the page is verified and protected scams like this or like phishing.
Simple but the rush of everyday life or just careless sometimes make us to be defenseless against the new scams that are emerging in the network.
